Herbert John "Jackie" Gleason born in Brooklyn on February 26th, 1916 was one of the earliest stars of television. His father abandoned the family and his early years were hard. In later life, he was a big spender and a drinker, excessive and generous but with a darker side that gave his comedy a sharp edge.
